INTERPRETATIONS:
DOUBLES
Doubling:
* Artists have long explored artistic doubling. Doubling involves combining forms or motifs that appear both alike and unalike.
Works of doubling also explore questions of identity - how we distinguish one form, object, or person from another; how we perceive likeness and unlikeness, resemblance and difference.
- How can artworks cause us to perceive two moments in time at once?
- What is the viewer’s experience of seeing the same thing twice?
- What does it mean to paint the same motif twice?

In painting scenes for a second time, Raleigh ensures that one version is not a copy and that the original painting is not more unique than its double.
