Lives & Locations
Lives & Locations
These paintings trace my times and travels across our country and the World. They are a way for me to pause and spend time with the places, people and nature that spoke to me.
From the early years of my life to the present, I've been observing the play of light on bodies of water and have absorbed its magnificence. As a painter, seascapes fanfare the uncanny play of light and shadow. In viewing these works, there is an invitation in each painting for you to finish their story with your own.
Doubles
* Artists have long explored artistic doubling. Doubling involves combining forms or motifs that appear both alike and unalike.
Works of doubling also explore questions of identity - how we distinguish one form, object, or person from another; how we perceive likeness and
unlikeness, resemblance and difference.
- How can artworks cause us to perceive two moments in time at once?
- What is the viewer’s experience of seeing the same thing twice?
- What does it mean to paint the same motif twice?

In painting scenes for a second time, Raleigh ensures that one version is not a copy and that the original painting is not more unique than its double.
